First edition. A review of the theories of the origin and relative abundance of the elemnts and a discussion of their cosmological implications. Includes bibliography (pp. 209-12). The cosmic microwave background was predicted in 1948 by Ralph Alpher, Robert Herman, and George Gamow. Alpher and Herman were able to estimate the temperature of the cosmic microwave background to be 5 K, though two years later they re-estimated it at 28 K.
