First edition in French of Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics (New Haven 1902), translated by F. Cosserat and J. Rossignol. Introduction by M. Brillouin. A dissertation on "the analogy ... between the average behavior of a canonical ensemble of systems and the behavior of a physical system pbeying the laws of thermodynamics"(Martin J. Klein in D.S.B., 5, p. 392). In a 1911 note in the Annalen, Einstein said that had he know of Gibb's book in 1902, he would not have published his own work; cf. A. Einstein, Bemerkungen zu den P.
