"In his doctoral thesis of 1841 Heinrich Adolf Bardeleben [1819-95], later a noted German surgeon and supporter of Lister's new methods, stated that the vesicles [of the thyroid gland] did not intercommunicate, a view which was not finally confirmed until about thirty years ago"(Singer & Underwood, pp. 519-20).
