Fourth edition, enlarged, of Bardeleben's textbook on surgery and operative surgery, based on Traité de pathologie externe et de médecine opératoire, by A. T. Vidal. "In his doctoral thesis of 1841 Heinrich Adolf Bardeleben [1819-95], later a noted German surgeon and supporter of Lister's new methods, stated that the vesicles [of the thyroid gland] did not intercommunicate, a view which was not finally confirmed until about thirty years ago"(Singer & Underwood, pp. 519-20).
