Hannes Alfvén, Nobel Prize winning astrophysicist, contributed to significant advances in the fields of magnetohydrodynamics (the study of plasmas in magnetic fields), plasma physics, and cosmology.
He shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Louis Néel in 1970, for his essential contributions in founding plasma physics - the study of plasmas (ionized gases).

Cf. Alfvén waves, disturbances transmitted through a plasma in the presence of a magnetic field. They have been observed in the solar wind and in the magnetic fields surrounding planets.

"Alfven developed many controversial theories explaining the behavior of interstellar magnetic fields, debunking the "big bang," and attempting to rewrite the history of the solar system. Though initially ignored or rejected, many of his ideas were later extremely influential in revolutionizing the disciplines of astrophysics and geophysics. He was also an advocate of nuclear armaments destruction, working actively with other scientists such as Harold Urey to prevent nuclear proliferation and conflict"(http://orpheus.ucsd.edu).

"Hannes Olof Gösta Alfvén was born in Norrköping, Sweden, in 1908. His parents Johannes Alfvén and Anna-Clara Romanus were both practising physicians. Hannes Alfvén studied at Uppsala University from 1926, he obtained the degree of doctor of philosophy in 1934, in this same year he was appointed lecturer in physics at Uppsala University. In 1937 he became research physicist at the Nobel Institute for Physics in Stockholm, in 1940 he was appointed Professor in the Theory of Electricity at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Professor of Electronics in 1945, and Professor of Plasma Physics in 1963. Since 1967 he is visiting professor of Physics at the University of California at San Diego. Hannes Alfvén died on April 2, 1995"(nobelprize.org).
Alfvén's Papers 1945-1991 are at University of California Libray, Special Collections.

Alfvén often published his original work in relatively inaccessable journals.
