First edition. The first human heart transplant is described. The steps leading up to this event are outlined briefly and the operative technique is detailed. The postoperative care of the patient following this successful operation is described. The operation, on the patient Louis Washansky, was performed on December 3, 1967, and the patient died on December 21.
