Five papers by Fermi on theoretical and experimental nuclear physics, atomic structure, and "the theory of the hyperfine structure of the spectral lines and the nuclear magnetic momenta" (Emilio Segré), and a semiquantitative method for the calculation of atomic properties. Fermi, best known to the general public for having produced the first controlled, self-sustained nuclear chain reaction. This experiment, which was carried out at the University of Chicago on December 2, 1942, made possible the development of the atomic bomb. In 1938, Enrico Fermi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics "for his demonstrations of the existence of new radioactive elements produced by neutron irradiation, and for his related discovery of nuclear reactions brought about by slow neutrons".
